come any later & I might not answer the door

and I’ve not been in a car since the ‘90s
not if you don’t count the odd taxi

remember the pictures you used to see
in old annuals & those picture books in the school library
showing us what cars would be like in the next century?

will we fly? will be able to breathe?

‘It wouldn’t matter if we had the Queen
sitting there, round for tea

he’d burst in from school, straight off that bus
hot, bothered - completely ignoring us
